We bellied up to the bar in Sumatra in great need of something cool to soothe our parched throats, and we told the server to surprise us. Did he ever! We watched him concoct two glasses of es cendol, a sweet, icy drink with rice flour jelly and coconut milk. Closer to dessert than a mere beverage, it absolutely perked us up, and we were ready to hit the beach again.
I vowed to memorialize the drink with a seat like the ones in Sumatra, and the Cendol Bar Stool was born. It is made of estategrown mahogany, has a curved kubu seat, and kubu lashes around the leg joints.
